Summer Analysts

American Compass’s mission is to restore an economic consensus that emphasizes the importance of family, community, and industry to the nation’s liberty and prosperity. Our research, commentary, and events foster debate about the future of American conservatism and development of a policy agenda that applies conservative principles to modern challenges.

Summer Internship Program Overview

This summer, we will host a small program in our Washington, D.C. office, offering the opportunity for interns to work closely with our team across research, policy, and communications. Interns will be full participants in all facets of our work, gain skills and experience, and build lasting relationships. Additional programming will provide opportunities to learn more about substantive policy issues and career paths in the field, and to socialize with coworkers and interns at other institutions.

Positions are intended to be full-time and run for 10 weeks, from mid-June to mid-August, with a salary of $600 per week. Some flexibility exists to accommodate the needs of individual interns.

We are seeking intellectually curious, enthusiastic, self-motivated candidates who are committed to advancing the Compass mission. Applicants must have prior work experience or be a rising college junior or senior or graduate student, and be available to work in-person in Washington, D.C. (though flexibility is available to work remotely on occasion). Positions are available in the roles of Research Analyst, Policy Analyst, and Communications Analyst; detailed descriptions for all three are included below.

Job Descriptions

Research Analyst

The research department commissions, edits, and conducts research and writing projects vital to challenging the existing economic consensus and restoring one emphasizing the importance of family, community, and industry. The research analyst will work directly with the research director to:

• Develop the American Compass research agenda and publication schedule;
• Gather data, scrutinize data analyses produced elsewhere, and create compelling written and visual presentations of data; and
• Edit written work by members of the Compass team and outside contributors.

Policy Analyst

The policy department works to inject American Compass’s work and perspectives into contemporary policy debates through each channel of the Compass platform, building relationships with and supporting the deliberations of policymakers, and executing special projects. The policy analyst will work directly with the policy director to:

• Track developments in the economy and on Capitol Hill that offer opportunities for advancing the American Compass agenda;
• Conduct research on the political history and economic data relevant to policymaking on issues like industrial, labor, and family policy; and
• Create materials—research memos, op-eds, etc.—explaining American Compass’s research and outlining policy proposals.

Communications Analyst

The communications department develops and manages the capabilities, infrastructure, and processes necessary to disseminate American Compass’s work to the broadest possible audience. The communications analyst will work directly with the communications director to:

• Draft public communications for social media, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Plan and execute public-facing events both online and in-person; and
• Manage the organization’s online presence, assessing the effectiveness of existing practices and implementing improvements.
