{"id":15475,"date":"2023-12-29T13:26:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-29T18:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americancompass.org\/?p=15475"},"modified":"2024-01-02T13:28:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T18:28:34","slug":"is-romneys-former-adviser-building-the-post-trump-gop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americancompass.org\/is-romneys-former-adviser-building-the-post-trump-gop\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Romney\u2019s former adviser building the post-Trump GOP?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At first glance, Oren Cass is an amalgam of East Coast elitism \u2014 an Ivy League pedigree insulated in a Bain &amp; Company pullover. But this think tank maverick is no friend of the establishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A decade ago, he was on track to become one of them, acing his final year at Harvard Law while simultaneously serving as Mitt Romney\u2019s top domestic policy adviser for his 2012 presidential campaign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Cass has quickly carved out a reputation as one of the biggest thorns in the side of the Republican old guard, providing a defense of Donald Trump\u2019s disruption of conservative doctrine and authoring a policy agenda for GOP legislators trying to raise something from the rubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe problem is that Trump was not necessarily a very effective builder,\u201d Cass told me. \u201cHe was very good at knocking things down. But I don\u2019t think he brought a coherent vision for where to go forward. And so that is the work that is now being done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chiseling away at what he sees as an outmoded economic orthodoxy and replacing it with a Republican agenda centered around family, community and nation, has become Cass\u2019 mission, and that of American Compass, the organization he founded in December 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The subsequent four years have seen Cass\u2019 clout on Capitol Hill grow at a rapid clip. American Compass is now&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commentary.org\/articles\/matthew-continetti\/new-right-vs-conservatism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">characterized<\/a>&nbsp;as one of the most impactful groups inside the Beltway,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2021\/08\/05\/republican-economic-populism-502412\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">influencing prominent senators<\/a>&nbsp;like Romney, J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and providing a blueprint for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/11\/03\/american-moment-conservative-00124178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new generation<\/a>&nbsp;of eager congressional staffers.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While his research methods and left-wing funding sources have drawn the ire of many right-of-center thinkers, Cass rejects the charge that he is hitching an opportunistic ride on the Trump train.
