On Thursday, American Compass inaugurated its Distinguished Fellows program and welcomed eight fellows who will bring extensive experience to the organization from leadership roles in government, politics, academia, and the private sector, where they have challenged outdated orthodoxies and charted the course toward a political economy that serves ordinary American citizens.

The organization also announced a new cohort of members joining its Compass Advisory Board and the hiring of Johnny Burtka, formerly the president of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and executive director of The American Conservative, as editorial director and philanthropy chair.

The Distinguished Fellows are:

  • Andy Baker, former Deputy National Security Advisor
  • Julius Krein, editor of American Affairs and president of the New American Industrial Alliance
  • Robert Lighthizer, former U.S. Trade Representative
  • Stephen Miran, former Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers
  • Jacob Reses, former Chief of Staff, Office of the Vice President
  • Jeff Sessions, former U.S. Attorney General and U.S. Senator
  • Gail Slater, former Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust, U.S. Department of Justice
  • Pierre Yared, former acting Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers

“The United States is entering a critical period for American Compass,” said founder and chief economist Oren Cass. “We are proud of, and grateful for, the opportunity to work with so many of the national leaders who are shaping the future of American conservatism and political economy.”

“I am honored to be included in this esteemed and talented group,” said Gail Slater, who also serves as competition and technology policy chair for the organization. “American Compass is both hub and spoke to the future for the right. It is a pleasure working with the men and women who are laying the groundwork for the next era of peace and prosperity.”

“American Compass is the most important policy shop and membership network in DC today,” said Johnny Burtka. “Its work will define the future of the New Right—and America itself. No other think tank is doing more to define and advance the common good, and I am honored to join Oren and Abby in pursuit of its mission.”
